2004 Sunbelt Agricultural Exposition Report
Phil Peoples

I am happy to announce that the 2004 Sunbelt Expo, held in Moultrie Georgia  October 19-21  was, without a doubt the most productive effort we have assembled. This years event was set in motion when the originators of this years Expo invited us to conduct DNA Tenderness Testing while participating   with the State of Georgia’s Veterinarians  during the customary yearly cattle demonstrations that are conducted in the Bill Patten agricultural pavilion. This information was then published on the Expo’s web site’s  Press Releases under the caption “No More Tough Steaks--- Thanks to DNA Tenderness Testing”.

Mr. Paul Swisher Tenderness Coordinator for the American Pinzgauer Association conducted the demonstrations to DNA tenderness a Pinzgauer Bull. This exposed and promoted our breed three times a day to a captive audience estimated to be 2000 attendees. To support the many questions generated by Mr. Swishers demonstrations, members of both the Bovigen and Igenity DNA test facilities were available to lend support to our efforts. At the conclusion of each event attendees were invited to visit the two sets of pens assembled by the Southern Pinzgauer Promotional Group. This   years booths were arranged with a Pinzgauer Bull and bred heifer in one pen and four cross bred Pinzgauer calves in the other pen. We were amazed at the many questions and inquiries generated by our crossbred  pen. This gave us a chance to showcase the Pinzgauer bulls potential as we answered the many questions posed by prospective Pinzgauer breeders. Also noteworthy is the Pinzgauer cattle shared the same ring as Sonny Perdue the Governor of the State of Georgia who is fascinated with agricultural technology.

The Expo’s Press  Releases, billed DNA Tenderness Testing as a tool for the modern rancher. The two sets of pens assembled by the Groups promotional efforts, generated articles that advertised the Pinzgauer Breed, billed the DNA Testing, as sophistication of the farm show, to broaden this years forum, and introduce new and exciting technology in the following publications.

            a. The Sunbelt Expo Web Page

             b. The Cattle South Magazine

             c. The Progressive Farmer

             d. The Southern Farmer        (Front page coverage)

            e. The Farm Press

             f. The Sunbelt Official Show Guide

             g. The Alabama Farmers and Consumers Bulletin

Television crews from the Georgia Farm Monitor filmed the Pinzgauer cattle for a video that is currently being aired across the United States by the RFD-TV Network.  Along with some really good shots of the cattle, these television spots depict, to potential customers, the American Pinzgauer Associations efforts to promote the use of tenderness tested Pinzgauer bulls in their cross breeding efforts.

This years Expo was hosted by 1200 exhibitors occupied 2 million square feet of space and drew over 200,000 visitors from all over the United States, with many foreign countries  represented.

In conclusion I would personally like to thank the members of the Southern Pinzgauer Promotional Group for their hard work and sacrifice, with special thanks to Mr. Paul Swisher for his dedicated work to make this promotional event a success.
